The Afro Feminist Data Governance research aims to understand better data use for stakeholders, specifically in the following target countries: Côte D’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia. Through the use of a collaborative feminist approach to data governance, grounded in African realities and experience, the work aims to interrogate and co-create data-driven solutions with relevant stakeholders such as governments, civil society actors, and regional economic zones such as The East Africa Community (EAC), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and The Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Artificial intelligence (AI) use has increased despite Africa’s huge digital infrastructure and skills gaps. We thus ask ourselves: what measures governments have implemented to curb the historical marginalisation of different communities? Over 30 African countries have data protection acts or legislation and privacy frameworks, with most making advancements in AI frameworks. This repository consolidates several enacted laws, policies, conventions, and frameworks governing data in the target countries. This repository serves as a tool to gather, preserve and share these data governance instruments with the public.

This repository briefly reviews the legal frameworks of the four target countries. It can be used to check the legal frameworks in other African countries and their effectiveness in enforcing gender sensitivity and equality.
